AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Various studies

published 1841

Lithograph | 48.8 x 40.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851461

A lithographic facsimile reproducing studies featured on the two sides of a double-sided drawing by Raphael (c.1507) now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.177). This print is lettered with the title and the attribution of the drawing to Raphael. Numbered 15 at top centre. Ruland (1876) notes that this print was: "published in the "Lawrence Gallery" No.15". This is a publication of thirty facsimiles of drawings by Raphael from the Lawrence Gallery (collection of Sir Thomas Lawrence) announced by Mr Woodburn in 1838 in the Literary Gazette.

The female head study and the five sketches of cupids (upper portion of the print) appear on the recto of the drawing (see RCIN 851459); the three nude female sketches and the study of a women's neck (lower portion of the print) are on the verso of the drawing (see RCIN 851460). Most of the studies are associated with Raphael's 'Saint Catherine of Alexandria', a painting now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no.NG 168). Photographs of the painting at RCINs 851456, 851457.
