Study of a male head, and other studies

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 32.5 x 20.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851433

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1500-01) formerly in the Wicar Museum, Lille, and now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille (inv. no.Pl 475). The principal drawing is a study for the head of St Nicholas in the Coronation of St Nicholas of Tolentino, the main panel of an altarpiece commissioned from Raphael by Andrea di Tommaso Baronci in 1500. The altarpiece, completed in 1501, was subsequently dismembered and survives only in four fragments (Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples, inv. no.50; Brescia, Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, inv no.149; Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. no.RF 1981-55). Another study for the Coronation of St Nicholas is on the recto side of the photographed drawing; see RCIN 851432.
