STEFANO MULINARI (1741-90)

Saint Nicholas of Tolentino

published 1774

Colour aquatint with etching | 23.4 x 15.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851604

A print after a drawing now in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.1330F). The authorship of the drawing, which has been formerly attributed to Raphael, is a matter of dispute, with some scholars ascribing it to his School, and others suggesting an attribution to Correggio (Agosti 2001). Ruland (1876) interpreted the subject as St Bruno. A copy after the drawing is in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, where it is catalogued as by the circle of Ludovico Carracci (RCIN 901819). Published in 'Disegni originali d'eccellenti pittori esistenti nella reale galleria di Firenze', Florence 1774, plate XXXVI, no.128.
