AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Saint Margaret and the Dragon

c.1853-76

28.5 x 18.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851505

A photograph of a drawing now in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv. no.A 75). The drawing corresponds closely to the 'Saint Margaret', a painting now in the Kunstistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no.629). It has been suggested that the drawing may be either a workshop copy after a preparatory study by Raphael for the painting, or an original study for it (probably executed by the workshop). The authorship of the painting is also debated: it is generally believed that the invention is by Raphael, but the execution is likely to have been carried out by his workshop.
