ELISABETH SOPHIE LE HAY CHÉRON (1648-1711)

Saint Cecilia

c.1660-1711

Etching | 24.3 x 16.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851483

A print reproducing a drawing then in the Cabinet de Piles and attributed to Raphael, as lettered on print. The composition is similar to that of a drawing now in the Petit Palais, Paris (inv. Dutuit 980; a photograph at RCIN 851476), but in reverse and without the group of the angels. The drawing in the Petit Palais is thought to be a copy after a now lost design by Raphael for his 'Saint Cecilia', a painting currently in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna (inv. no.577), and might have served as the modello for an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (RCIN 851474). Lettered with production details.
