AFTER A WORK ASSOCIATED WITH RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Martha leading Mary Magdalene to the Temple

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 15.4 x 21.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851625

A photograph of a drawing now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no.183). The drawing appears to reproduce the composition of one of the frescoes once in the Chapel of Mary Magdalene in the church of SS. Trinità dei Monti, Rome, executed by Giulio Romano and Gianfrancesco Penni between 1520 and 1524, and now destroyed. It has been suggested that the photographed drawing may be a copy, in reverse, after a chiaroscuro woodcut by George Matheus (RCINs 851822, 851823), which in turn is based on an engraving of this composition by Marcantonio Raimondi, an impression of which can be found at RCIN 851621.
