? GEORGE MATHEUS (16C)

Martha leading Mary Magdalene to the Temple

c.1550-1600

Chiaroscuro woodcut | 23.5 x 34.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851623

A chiaroscuro woodcut which is a copy after an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (RCIN 851621). First state, signed on plate at lower centre: M. (George Matheus?). Printed from two blocks in beige. Another impression of this plate at RCIN 851622.

The engraving by Raimondi is thought to reproduce one of the frescoed lunettes formerly in the Chapel of Mary Magdalene in the church of SS. Trinità dei Monti, Rome. The frescoes, executed by Giulio Romano and Gianfrancesco Penni between 1520 and 1524, are now destroyed. See Bibliographic References.
