AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO GIULIO ROMANO (ROME C. 1499-MANTUA 1546)

Martha leading Mary Magdalene to the Temple

c.1860-76

Carbon print | 22.4 x 33.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851624

A photograph of a drawing now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth House (inv. no.63), related to one of the frescoes once in the Chapel of Mary Magdalene in the church of SS. Trinità dei Monti, Rome, illustrating episodes from the life of the saint. The frescoes, executed by Giulio Romano and Gianfrancesco Penni between 1520 and 1524, are now destroyed.

Scholars are divided as to the authorship of the photographed drawing, with some ascribing it to Raphael (Oberhuber/Gnann 1999, no.116), and others to his school (Penni/Giulio Romano; see Jaffé 1994).

The composition was engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi; an impression of his plate at RCIN 851621. Shoemaker (in Shoemaker/Broun 1981, p.172), who attributed the Chatsworth drawing to Giulio Romano, suggested that it may have served as model for the engraving.
