AFTER REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (LEIDEN 1606-AMSTERDAM 1669)

Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione, after Raphael, with notes

c.1860-76

Carbon print | 15.3 x 19.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852072

A photograph of a drawing by Rembrandt (dated 1639) now in the Albertina, Vienna.

The drawing is a quick sketch after Raphael's 'Portrait of Baldassarre Castiglione' which Rembrandt executed at the 1639 sale of the collection of Lucas van Uffelen in Amsterdam. Rembrandt also noted the price the painting fetched, together with other details of the sale. Raphael's portrait is currently in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. 611).
