PAOLO FIDANZA (B. 1731)

Head of Agostino Beazzano [from Raphael's 'Portrait of Andrea Navagero and Agostino Beazzano']

published 1785

Etching | 46.3 x 33.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852075

An etching of the head of Agostino Beazzano (c.1490-1549), a detail from Raphael's 'Portrait of Andrea Navagero and Agostino Beazzano' (1516) now in the Galleria Doria Pamphili, Rome (inv. FC 130). Published in ' Recueil de têtes choisies de personnages illustres dans les lettres et dans les armes éxactement dessinées et gravées de la grandeur des originaux par Paul Fidanza', Rome 1785, 2. The painting - now universally accepted as Raphael's original - has long been regarded as a high quality copy of the original, formerly thought to have gone lost. The legend below image attributes the painting to Raphael and identifies the sitter as Baldo de Ubaldis (1327-1400), pupil of the law professor Bartolo da Sassoferrato (1313-57). An etching by Fidanza of the head of Andrea Navagero can be found at RCIN 852074.
