AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Putto carrying the Medici ring and feathers

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 27.3 x 15.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853809

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv.no.A57), which is considered a preparatory study for part of the decoration of the Stanza di Eliodoro, painted by Raphael and his studio between 1511-14. Annotated on verso.

This drawing was previously connected to Raphael's fresco The Prophet Isaiah in Sant'Agostino, Rome, because of the close similarity between the pose of the putto depicted and that on the left of the Isaiah fresco. However, the drawing was identified in 1935 as a study for the putto on the pendentive to the right of the fresco depicting the meeting of Pope Leo the Great and Attila (see RCIN 853669 for a photograph of the room; see Bibliographic References for more on the history of the drawing's identification).
