AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Vision of Ezekiel

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | 22.7 x 16.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850167

A photograph of 'The Vision of Ezekiel', a painting executed by Raphael (c.1518) now in the Galleria Palatina, Florence (inv.no. 174). Annotated on the verso.

The painting depicts the divine apparition of God the Father with the symbols of the Four Evangelists (the eagle representing John, the lion representing Mark, the bull symbolising Luke and the angel symbolising St Matthew). The subject has been identified as the Vision of Ezekiel (1:4-28), although Raphael uses the Biblical reference only as a "general inspiration" for his painting (see Bibliographic References).
