The Temptation of Adam, and a reclining child

published 1 May 1818

Etching with aquatint | 40.2 x 32.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850177

An aquatint after a drawing by Raphael (c.1506-1507) now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. WA1846.180 verso). This print is lettered with the attribution of the design to Raphael, title and publication details. Published in William Young Ottley's 'Italian School of Design' (1808-23). Signed by the printmaker. See RCIN 850176 for a photograph of the drawing.

The figure of Adam was probably used by Marcantonio Raimondi for an engraving depicting Adam and Eve (see RCIN 850175 for it). The figure of the Child is inspired by Giovanni Bellini's 'Madonna with the sleeping Child' (Boston, Gardner Museum, inv. no. P16s2).

The drawing reproduced in this aquatint is on the verso of a sheet depicting a study for the Borghese Entombment, see RCIN 850262 for a photograph of the recto.
