MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (C. 1480-1534)

The Queen of Sheba visiting Solomon

c.1500-1527

Engraving | 39.4 x 55.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850190

An engraving catalogued by Bartsch as being executed by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael. Trimmed within the platemark.

Scholars disputed the attribution of this print. Bartsch reports Giorgio Vasari's opinion that this engraving was executed by Marco Dente da Ravenna, while Ruland (1876) references Passavant who attributed the greatest part of this print to Agostino Veneziano. Shoemaker (see Bibliographic References) agrees with Pierre-Jean Mariette in believing that this print was started by Marcantonio and completed by one of his followers.

The subject of 'Solomon and the Queen of Sheba' was frescoed by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the twelfth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. See RCIN 853617 for a photograph of the fresco. This print shares some elements with the fresco but does not appear directly related to it. On the other hand, this engraving seems closer to a drawing by Giovanni Francesco Penni (now in the Louvre, Paris; inv. no. 43397). See RCIN 850191 for a photograph of a drawing which is very similar to that by Penni.

Shoemaker (see Bibliographic References) explores the possible connection between this engraving and a fresco in a vault of the Palazzo Cancelleria in Rome, which has been recently attributed to Baldassarre Peruzzi (c.1519-1520).
