AFTER A WORK ASSOCIATED WITH GIOVANNI FRANCESCO PENNI (1496-C. 1536)

The Queen of Sheba visiting Solomon

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | 18.6 x 27.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850191

A photograph of a drawing which is very similar to that by Giovanni Francesco Penni now in the Louvre (inv.no. 43397). This drawn copy was described by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of Herr von Bethmann-Holweg at Rheibeck.

The subject of 'Solomon and the Queen of Sheba' was frescoed by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the twelfth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. See RCIN 853617 for a photograph of the fresco. See also RCIN 850190 for an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi which is very close to the drawing by Penni.
