ANNE CLAUDE PHILIPPE, COMTE DE CAYLUS (1692-1765)

The discovery of Joseph's cup in Benjamin's Sack

c.1720-1755

Etching | 21.7 x 39.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850186

A reversed etching of a drawing now in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 3851), which is currently considered a copy after a lost original by Raphael. This print is signed by the printmaker and lettered with the attribution of the drawing to Raphael and its location in the 'Cabinet du Roy'. Numbered 108 at top right. This print was published in 'Cabinet du Roy', a set of etchings executed by the Comte de Caylus reproducing drawings from the French Royal collection. On watermarked paper. Annotated on the verso.

It has been suggested that this drawing could be a study by Giovanni Francesco Penni for a never-realised project in one of the Vatican Logge (see Bibliographic References). See RCIN 850185 for a photograph of this drawing.
