Adam and Eve
c.1790-182624.8 x 20.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850179
An aquatint after an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi depicting Adam and Eve in a landscape. Signed by the printmaker with the attribution of the composition to Raphael. See RCIN 850175 for the print by Raimondi.
Scholars dispute the source for the composition executed by Marcantonio. The figure of Adam is very similar to the one depicted by Raphael in a drawing now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. WA1846.180 verso; see RCIN 850176 for a photograph of it). On the other hand, the background landscape and the style of the trees are influenced by the engravings of Lucas van Leyden. See Bibliographic References for further discussion. Shoemaker (see Bibliographic References) dates Marcantonio's engraving c.1512-1514.
