MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (C. 1480-1534)

Adam and Eve

c.1510-1515

Engraving | 24.1 x 17.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850175

An engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi depicting Adam and Eve in a landscape. Trimmed within the platemark.

Scholars dispute the source for this composition. The figure of Adam is very similar to the one depicted by Raphael in a drawing now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. WA1846.180 verso; see RCIN 850176 for a photograph of it). On the other hand, the background landscape and the style of the trees are influenced by the engravings of Lucas van Leyden. See Bibliographic References for further discussion. Shoemaker (see Bibliographic References) dates this engraving c.1512-1514.
