A photograph of a drawing by a member of the school of Raphael now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. 1846.214).

The subject has been interpreted by Ruland (1876) as the Levite Dathan and his followers being engulfed in flames by the wrath of God. The passage of the Red Sea and the Flood have also been suggested.
