AFTER BENVENUTO DI PIETRO TISI, CALLED GAROFALO (1476-FERRARA 1559)
The Raising of Lazarus
c.1853-76Albumen print | 19.0 x 32.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850531
A photograph of a drawing now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth (inv. no. 173), where it is attributed to Benvenuto Tisi so-called Garofalo.
Traditionally believed to be by Raphael – probably on the basis of the pose of the woman in the foreground which is reminiscent of that depicted by Raphael in The Transfiguration – this drawing is now considered a study by Garofalo for a relief. See RCIN 850327 for a photograph of The Transfiguration.
