The Massacre of the Innocents

dated 1843

Engraving | 41.2 x 52.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850418

An engraving depicting The Massacre of the Innocents. This print is signed and dated by the printmaker with publication details and attribution of the design to Raphael. Lettered with the title which indicates that this print is after a drawing that was at the time in the collection of the Dowager Queen of Saxony. See RCIN 850423 for a photograph of this drawing and RCIN 850413 for an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi.

The Massacre of the Innocents was produced during the early years of the collaboration between Marcantonio and Raphael; six drawings by Raphael related to this composition survive, though no painting is known.
