A photograph of a drawing depicting the hanging body of Christ for a Descent from the Cross that Ruland (1876) catalogued as formerly being in the collection of Dr Wellesley, Oxford. Annotated on the verso.
This drawing is very similar to one now in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 3880r) which was historically attributed to Raphael but it is now believed to be a copy after Raphael's lost original. See RCIN 850455 for a photograph of the drawing in the Louvre.
Three drawings by Raphael related to the depiction of The Descent from the Cross survive and one of these (now in the Albertina, Vienna; inv. no. 245v; see RCIN 850453 for a photograph of it) is dated c. 1506-07 and bears a close resemblance with the figures depicted in the upper register of an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi. See RCIN 850448 for the print by Raimondi. Ugo da Carpi executed a chiaroscuro woodcut of this composition in reverse and scholars agree that both prints are based on the same model, now lost.
