The Entombment of Christ
after 1768Etching | 19.2 x 17.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850552
An etching which is a copy of a print (see RCIN 850551 for it) reproducing a drawing depicting The Entombment of Christ now in the Albertina Museum, Vienna (inv. no. 197). Signed with the attribution of the drawing to Raphael.
This drawing was historically attributed to Raphael but it is currently catalogued as by an unknown French artist. See RCIN 850556 for a photograph of the drawing.
According to Cordellier/Py (see Bibliographic References) a print by Lucas Vostermann (dated 1628; see RCIN 850554 for it) reproduces a drawing by Raphael when in the Arundel collection. The composition of this drawing (now lost) is known through other drawings; among them, one in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 10165; probably reproduced in a print at RCIN 850553), one listed by Ruland (1876) as being then in the possession of Sir George Warnon but not included in the Raphael Collection, one catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of Mr Grahl (see RCIN 850557 for a photograph of it) and the drawing in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 197) reproduced in the print at RCIN 850551.
