An engraving attributed to Agostino Veneziano depicting The Entombment of Christ. Trimmed within the platemark.
As Ruland (1876) noted, this print is probably after a composition by a Venetian artist, as it is related to the iconography of the 'Imago Pietatis' (or Christ of Pity) which was initially developed in the Byzantine culture. Due to the close relationship between the Byzantine Empire and Venice, this image of Christ – shown with the wounds of the Crucifixion, the so-called 'Arma Christi' (the Instruments of the Passion) and with angels or other characters supporting Christ's body (in this engraving St John the Evangelist, the Virgin, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea) – then became popular in the Venetian area.
