ANDREA MANTEGNA (1431-1506)

The Entombment

c.1470-1500

Engraving | 32.9 x 46.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850257

An engraving by Andrea Mantegna depicting the Entombment. This is probably a later impression of the print. Trimmed within the platemark.

This print was catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being related to the Borghese Entombment, a painting executed by Raphael (1507) now in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (inv.no. 170). A connection appears unlikely, as this engraving was executed before the painting, but Raphael might have been familiar with the print (see Bibliographic References).
