The Adoration of the shepherds
c.1540-70Engraving | 27.9 x 18.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850489
An engraving by Giorgio Ghisi depicting The Adoration of the Shepherds. This is the second state of the print, which is signed with the monogram of the printmaker on the tablet.
Lewis (see Bibliographic References) relates this engraving with a series of prints commissioned from Ghisi to illustrate a missal for the Basilica of Santa Barbara, which was at the time the official church of the court based at Mantua. The missal was published in 1583 (after Ghisi's death) but the project started two decades before, during the pontificate of Pope Pius IV (1559-65) who granted permission for the publication.
