AFTER PIETRO PERUGINO (CITTÀ DELLA PIEVE C. 1450-FONTIGNANO 1523)

The Adoration of the shepherds

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 8.7 x 8.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850497

A photograph of a drawing now in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (inv. no. NMH 283/1863) where it is attributed to Pietro Perugino.

The authorship of this drawing is a matter of dispute: it was traditionally thought to be by Raphael, an attribution that was then rejected in favour of Perugino, on the basis of stylistic similarities with sketches by Perugino in the Uffizi, Florence for a Birth of the Virgin and other compositions dated c.1497. As scholars do not agree on the involvement of the young Raphael in these works by Perugino, the attribution of this drawing to Raphael has been again suggested. See Bibliographic References for further discussion.
