Christ in the house of Simon

dated 1609

Chiaroscuro woodcut | RCIN 850525

A chiaroscuro woodcut which is probably a copy after a print by Marcantonio Raimondi depicting Christ in the house of Simon. This print is lettered with the attribution of the design to Raphael. Signed and dated by the publisher with his monogram. This is probably the second state of the print. Five impressions of this print are in the Raphael Collection: see RCINs 850524, 850526, 850527 and 850528. See RCIN 850520 for the print by Raimondi.

The engraving by Raimondi is based on a now lost fresco executed after Raphael's death by Giulio Romano and Giovanni Francesco Penni in the Chapel of Mary Magdalene of St Trinitá dei Monti, Rome. It is plausible that Marcantonio used a drawing as a basis for his print, rather than the final fresco. This scene and the one depicting Martha leading Mary Magdalene to Christ (both frescoed in lunettes) have been engraved by Marcantonio. See RCIN 851621 for the other engraving.

Similarities between the engraving by Raimondi and the same scene painted in the Vatican Logge (which were designed by Raphael but executed by his workshop) have been noted. See Bibliographic References for further information.
