GIACOMO PILIZOTTI (B. 1807)
Venus and Vulcan
c.1827-1876Lithograph | 40.6 x 31.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851785
A lithographic facsimile of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of Archduke Albert at Vienna.
The drawing bears an old attribution to Giulio Romano and shows an influence by Raphael's compositions, as demonstrated by the winged Cupid holding an arch in the centre middleground which is a detail taken from a composition largely known through an engraving by Agostino Veneziano (thought to be based on a design by Raphael). An impression of Agostino's engraving at RCIN 851776.
