ERNST MORACE (1766-1820)

Venus and Vulcan

c.1800-10

Engraving | 51.2 x 37.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851777

A print after a painting attributed to the School of Giulio Romano currently housed in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.424). Lettered with engraver's name at lower right below image. Included in 'Le Musée Français, recueil complet des tableaux, statues et bas-reliefs...', Paris 1803-09.

The composition, also known through an engraving by Agostino Veneziano (RCIN 951776), has been traditionally associated with a design which, according to Passavant, was commissioned from Raphael by Giovanni Battiferri, who wished to have it frescoed by Vincenzo da Gimignano on the façade of his house in the Vatican Borgo, Rome.

A handful of drawings of this subject survive, including two (inv. nos.3657, 3478) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, one in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no.D.844-1886), and another in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 990303). Ruland (1876) lists a further drawing of this subject as being then in the collection of Mr Tiffin, London; a photograph at RCIN 851779.
