GIULIO DI ANTONIO BONASONE (C. 1498-C. 1580)

The Wreath

c.1520-1546

Engraving | 33.5 x 43.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851831

An engraving based on a drawing by Giulio Romano currently housed in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv. no.A*48). Second state. Signed with the engraver's name at lower left: IV.BONASO.F.

The drawing on which this engraving is based is a study for a painted medallion in the Sala dei Venti in the Palazzo Te, Mantua. The engraving differs from the drawing in a few details, including the figure of the sleeping woman in the left foreground which may be an invention by Bonasone himself derived from the renowned classical sculpture of the 'Sleeping Ariadne' now in the Vatican Museums (see Massari 1983, I, p.62). A very late state of this plate at RCIN 851832.
