The Toilet of Venus

c.1853-76

Albumen print | RCIN 851675

A photograph of a pen and ink drawing now in the British Museum, London (inv. no.1895,0915.630). Scholarship is divided as to the authorship of the drawing, with some critics supporting the traditional attribution to Raphael (Oberhuber/Gnann 1999), and others ascribing it to Giovanni Francesco Penni (Pouncey/Gere 1962) or Giulio Romano (Clayton 1999). A reversed etching by C.M. Metz reproducing the drawing when in the Reveley Collection can be found at RCIN 851676.
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
