    The Judgment of Paris

    An engraving representing the 'Judgment of Paris', a composition designed by Raphael showing similarities to a grisaille fresco beneath the 'Parnassus' in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Museums (c.1512-13). At lower centre are the attribution of the design to Raphael (RAPH. VRBI INVEN), and (false) monogram of Marcantonio Raimondi (MAF).

    This engraving by Marco Dente has been long described as a copy after a print of the same subject by Raimondi (RCIN 851707) and dated between 1520 and 1527. Suggestions have been made that it may have been executed around 1515-16 after the original design by Raphael (see Massari in Raphael Invenit 1985, p.242, II.2).
