MASTER OF THE DIE (ACTIVE 1530-60)

The Fable of Cupid and Psyche

c. 1532

Engravings | RCIN 851790

A series of 32 numbered plates depicting episodes taken from Apuleius' Story of Cupid and Psyche , all of which were engraved by the Master of the Die with the exception of three by Agostino Veneziano (RCIN 851790.d; RCIN 851790.g; RCIN 851790.m). Formerly thought to have been designed by Raphael, the engravings are now reputed to be based on Raphael-inspired drawings which Vasari attributed to Michiel Coxie. Massari (in Raphael Invenit 1985, p.257) suggests a date of c.1532, the year in which Coxie met the Master of the Die in Rome.
