An engraving after a design by Raphael depicting episodes from book I of Virgil's 'Aeneid'. Second state. Antonio Salamanca's address has been scratched out (at lower centre in the lower right compartment). A first state impression at RCIN 851662. Preparatory studies by Raphael for the composition are currently housed in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth House (inv. no.727 a,b,c). Photographs of two of these studies at RCINs 851665, 851666. The engraving shows Neptune calming the Tempest which Aeolus raised against Aeneas' fleet (central compartment) surrounded by episodes taken from book I of 'Aeneid'.
