Mythology & Putti

Jupiter and Ganymede

c.1530-1550

Engraving | RCIN 851744

An engraving after a design traditionally ascribed to Raphael, but the authorship of which is a matter of dispute.

Some scholars suggest an attribution to Raphael's school (Massari in Raphael Invenit 1985), others to Baldassare Peruzzi (Zentai 1983; Cordellier/Py 1992). Signed on plate with engraver's monogram at lower right (a die with the letter B; see Nagler, I, no.1563). Lettered with 8 lines of verse below image. From a series of four engravings depicting Ovidian myths.

The other three engravings from the series can be found at RCIN 851743 ('Chariots of Venus and Apollo'), RCIN 851745 ('Allegory of Marriage and Love') and RCIN 851747 ('The Phoenix'). It has been suggested that the series may date c.1532 (Massari in Raphael Invenit 1985, p.258, under no.X.4).
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
