AGOSTINO DEI MUSI (C. 1490-AFTER 1536)
Hercules Strangling the Nemean Lion
dated 1528Engraving | 17.3 x 11.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851843
An engraving after a design the authorship of which is matter of dispute. Signed with engraver's monogram on plinth at lower left: A.V.; dated at upper centre: 1528. Only state.
The composition has been traditionally attributed to Raphael. Some scholars have suggested that the composition may derive from a (lost) drawing by Giulio Romano related to the frescoes of the Sala dei Cavalli in the Palazzo Te in Mantua illustrating the 'Labours of Hercules'. The decoration of the room was designed by Giulio, and executed by Rinaldo Mantovano and Benedetto Pagni between 1527 and 1528.
