c.1515-20Engraving | RCIN 851880
An engraving after a design traditionally ascribed to Raphael. First state.
A drawing formerly in the collection of Ploos van Amstel, Amsterdam, and later in that of C. Josi (Cordellier/Py 1992, p.333) has been suggested as Raphael's original design on which this engraving may have been based (Passavant, 1860, II, p.587, under no.64), but is currently untraced. The composition is thought to be related with studies preparatory for the 'Loggia di Psiche' (1517-19) in the Villa Farnesina, Rome (Raphael Invenit 1985, p.258, XI.1). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
