Cupid and Psyche together in the Nuptial Bed

c.1680-1710

Mezzotint | RCIN 851799

A mezzotint the composition of which is derived from an engraving by the Master of the Die (RCIN 851790.ff); in reverse. The latter is from a series of 32 plates depicting episodes from Apuleius’ ‘Fable of Cupid and Psyche’. Formerly thought to have been designed by Raphael, the plates are now generally thought to be after designs by Michiel Coxie. For a comment on the series, see RCIN 851790.

The present print is lettered with production details at lower left within image.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
