An engraving from a series of 150 prints by Giulio Bonasone entitled 'Aschillis Bocchii Bonon. Symbolicarum quaestionum de universo genere quas serio ludebat libri quinque' (The Emblems of Achilles Bocchius). The first edition was published in 1555 in Bologna; the second edition was retouched by Agostino Carracci and published in 1574.

The present print depicts the 'XCVI symbol'; its composition is based on one of the compartments (fourth compartment left) of the 'Quos Ego', an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi after a Raphael design dating c.1516. A first state impression of the engraving by Raimondi at RCIN 851662; a second state at RCIN 851663.
