AFTER A WORK PREVIOUSLY ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

A crouching female figure

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 27.7 x 20.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851684

A photograph of a red chalk drawing now in the Biblioteca Reale, Turin (Bancone Cart. I/5 recto). The drawing bears an old attribution to Raphael. Ruland suggested that the drawing may be a study for a Venus (perhaps copied from the Antique), and pointed out the similarity with a crouching Venus in an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (RCIN 851685).
