Life and Legend of the Virgin Mary

Life and Legend of the Virgin Mary

AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO GIOVANNI FRANCESCO PENNI (1496-C. 1536)

The Dormition of the Virgin, with her Coronation above

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 29.8 x 21.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851403

A photograph of a drawing generally attributed to Giovanni Francesco Penni now in the British Museum, London (inv. no.1860,0616.84). The drawing has been connected with the 'Madonna of Monteluce', a painting completed by Giulio Romano and Giovanni Francesco Penni in 1525 partially after designs by Raphael, to whom the commission was originally entrusted in 1503. Some scholars have suggested that the drawing may be a copy by Penni after a lost Raphael study for the painting (Pouncey/Gere 1962), while others support an attribution to Raphael himself (Oberhuber/Gnann 1999). A photograph of the 'Madonna of Monteluce' at RCIN 851401.
