published 1803Etching | 13.8 x 18.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851421
An outline-etching reproducing the composition of the Birth of the Virgin, a fresco executed by Francesco Torbido in the choir of the Duomo of Verona after designs by Giulio Romano, to whom the commission was originally entrusted. The execution of the composition is wrongly attributed on plate to Raphael, and the subject is incorrectly described as the 'birth of the Infant Baptist'. Published in C.P. Landon, Vie et Œuvre complète de Raphaël Sanzio, 1803, plate 223.
