Life and Legend of the Virgin Mary

Life and Legend of the Virgin Mary

MASTER OF THE DIE (ACTIVE 1530-60)

The Assumption of the Virgin

c.1530-1550

Engraving | 25.9 x 21.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851406

A print thought to reproduce a lost design by Raphael. First state. Signed with engraver's monogram at lower right (die with the letter B; see Nagler, I, no.1563).

The lower part of a drawing generally attributed to G.F. Penni now in the British Museum, London (inv. no.1860,0811.10) corresponds in reverse with this engraving in some details (the two foreground Apostles, the the design of the tomb, the Virgin); it has been suggested that the source both for the engraving and the drawing attributed to Penni might be a lost design by Raphael (H. Chapman, BM website entry).

The lost design may have been executed by Raphael for the 'Madonna of Monteluce', a commission he had received in 1503 but eventually completed by Giulio Romano and Giovanni Francesco Penni in 1525, or for the a panel to be housed in the Chigi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome (Shearman 1961, pp.143-4).
