The drawing reproduces a composition known from an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi dated c.1515, although without the figure of St Joseph. The engraving by Raimondi is thought to have been based upon a lost design by Raphael dating from c.1507-08. An impression of Raimondi's engraving can be found at RCIN 851242.
