published 1812

Etching | 36.7 x 26.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850794

An etching after a painting when in the collection of Lucien Bonaparte, Rome. The painting, which later entered the collection of the King of the Netherlands (The Hague), is one of a number reproducing a composition traditionally known as the Madonna del Velo, the original version of which (currently untraced) is thought to have been executed by Raphael’s workshop to a design of the master dating c.1510-12 (see Bibliographic References). Also engraved by Martinet (see RCIN 850786).

Showing the Christ Child sleeping on the left, with the Virgin looking at Him while lifting a veil over His head and supporting the Infant Baptist who kneels down on the right while pointing at the Child; in a landscape.
