Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

LUIGI FABRI (C. 1778-1835 OR LATER)

The Virgin and Child with two Angels [‘The Madonna of the Candelabra’]

c.1812

Etching | 29.4 x 21.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850967

An etching after the so-called Madonna of the Candelabra, a circular painting now in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (inv. no.37.484), the attribution of which is still disputed. Lettered with the title and production details. At the time this print was made, the painting was in the collection of Lucien Bonaparte in Rome. Published in Choix de gravures à l'eau forte, d'après les peintures originales et les marbres de la galerie de Lucien Bonapartes, 1812, pl.130.

The execution of the painting is generally ascribed to the workshop of Raphael, with the master’s role in the invention of the composition being questioned.

Showing the Virgin supporting the Christ Child seating on a cushion, with two angels holding candelabra at either side.
