Holy Families & Madonna and Child

ADOLPHE BRAUN (1812-77)

The Virgin and Child with the Infant Baptist [‘The Madonna of the Blue Diadem’]

c.1860-76

Carbon print | 46.0 x 33.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850887

A photograph of the so-called Madonna of the Blue Diadem, a painting generally attributed to Raphael’s workshop (possibly G.F. Penni or Giulio Romano) housed in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.603). The painting has long been attributed to Raphael, an opinion also shared by Ruland (1876).

Showing the Virgin lifting a veil over the sleeping Christ Child with the Infant Baptist kneeling down in adoration on the right; in a landscape.
