Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Virgin and Child with the Infant Baptist

c.1650-1750

Etching | 8.3 x 5.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850893

An etching after a painting catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the Bridgewater Gallery, London. The painting appears to be a replica the so-called ‘Madonna of the Blue Diadem’, a painting generally attributed to Raphael’s workshop (possibly G.F. Penni or Giulio Romano) housed in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 603; see RCIN 850887 for it).

Showing the Virgin lifting a veil over the sleeping Christ Child with the Infant Baptist kneeling down in adoration on the right; in a landscape.
