The Virgin and Child with St Elizabeth and St John the Baptist ['The Madonna of the Palm Tree']
c.1515-1530Engraving | RCIN 850926
This engraving is a copy in the same direction of a print by Marcantonio Raimondi, the subject of which is traditionally known as 'The Madonna of the Palm Tree'. The composition is probably derived from a lost design by Raphael related to the so-called ‘Madonna del Divino Amore’ (c.1516), a painting now in the Museo e Gallerie Nazionali di Capodimonte, Naples (inv. no.146), the execution of which is ascribed to Raphael's workshop. For an impression of Marcantoino's engraving, see RCIN 850925. A photograph of the 'Madonna del Divino Amore' can be found at RCIN 850910.
